Florence is one of those cities where history doesn’t feel tucked away inside museums—it surrounds you.
From magnificent Renaissance architecture and sculpture to narrow cobblestone streets, bustling piazzas, wonderful shopping, beautiful jewelry, and little restaurants tucked into centuries-old buildings, Florence feels exciting from the moment you arrive.
For anyone who loves European history, Florence is especially fascinating. So much of what we read about the Renaissance happened right here, and walking through the city gives you an entirely different appreciation for that period of history.
Florence has tremendous energy. The streets and piazzas are busy, but the city still manages to feel elegant and remarkably beautiful.
Everywhere you look there seems to be another church, sculpture, historic building, beautiful storefront, or architectural detail worth stopping for.
What We Loved Most
Having history all around us.
That was probably the thing we loved most about Florence.
You aren’t simply visiting historic attractions and then returning to a modern city. In Florence, the history is the city.
You walk the same narrow streets, pass buildings that have stood for centuries, and find reminders of the Renaissance everywhere. If you enjoy European history, it is difficult not to be fascinated by Florence.
Our Most Memorable Moment
One of our favorite Florence memories began almost by accident.
We started talking with the gentleman who had a horse and buggy and initially just wanted to take some pictures with the horse. Before long, he was taking us on a carriage ride through Florence.
It was surreal.
As the carriage traveled down those narrow cobblestone streets, surrounded by historic buildings, it was easy to imagine what Florence might have looked and felt like centuries ago at the height of the Renaissance.
For a little while, it felt as though we had stepped backward in time.
It remains one of our favorite memories from Florence.
What Surprised Us
The sheer amount of extraordinary history, art, and architecture concentrated into one relatively walkable city surprised us.
Florence is home to landmarks you’ve seen in books and photographs your entire life, yet seeing them in person is completely different.
You can walk through a piazza filled with Renaissance sculpture, turn a corner and discover another magnificent church, and then continue down a small street lined with shops and cafés.
There is simply so much to see.
Coffee, Food & Everyday Moments
Some of our favorite travel moments are usually the simplest ones—sitting outside at a little restaurant, having lunch, watching people walk by, and enjoying the fact that we have nowhere else we need to be.
Florence is perfect for that.
The historic center is filled with restaurants and cafés tucked into old buildings and along beautiful streets. Eating outside in Florence and simply watching the city go by became part of the experience.
Adventures Together
Florence is a city made for exploring.
We walked through the historic center, wandered through its piazzas, admired the Duomo and surrounding architecture, explored the streets near the Arno, saw the Ponte Vecchio, and spent plenty of time simply walking without worrying too much about where we were headed next.
And that may be one of the best ways to experience Florence.
Sometimes the street you weren’t planning to take becomes the one you remember.
Did We Feel Safe?
Absolutely.
We felt very safe walking around Florence.
As with any busy European destination, it is always smart to stay aware of your belongings in crowded tourist areas, but personally, we felt comfortable exploring the city.
Where We Stayed
For Florence, we would definitely recommend staying somewhere that makes it easy to walk into the historic center.
This is a city you want to experience on foot, so a central location can make a tremendous difference in how much you’re able to see and enjoy.
Things We Didn’t Love
The heat was probably our biggest challenge. We went mid September, and assumed we’d be past the heat.
Florence can be very hot, particularly when you are spending much of the day walking and sightseeing outside.
Which brings us to our biggest practical advice…
Things of Style Travel Tip
Be prepared for the heat.
Wear comfortable walking shoes, dress for the weather, carry water, and build in time to stop for lunch, coffee, or a little break during the hottest part of the afternoon.
You will likely be doing considerably more walking than you realize.
Shopping in Florence
Florence also has some wonderful shopping.
Along with fashion and specialty shops, we found beautiful jewelry. I came home with a gorgeous gold-and-silver bracelet that became one of those perfect travel purchases—something I can wear at home that immediately takes me back to the trip.
Shopping isn’t necessarily the first thing people associate with Florence, but it was another part of the city we really enjoyed.
Who Should Visit Florence?
If you enjoy walking, historic sightseeing, Renaissance art and architecture, European history, shopping, jewelry, lively streets, beautiful piazzas, and simply exploring an exciting city, Florence is absolutely worth visiting.
And if you have ever studied or read much European history, Florence becomes even more interesting.
The city was central to the Renaissance, and being physically surrounded by the places, architecture, and artwork connected to that period makes the history suddenly feel much more real.
Would We Go Back?
He: Yes.
She: Yes.
Absolutely.
There is simply too much to see to feel as though one visit is enough.
If You’re Looking For…
If you’re looking for a European destination with an exciting atmosphere, extraordinary history, Renaissance architecture, beautiful art, great shopping, wonderful food, and streets that make you want to keep exploring, Florence should be high on your list.
Final Thoughts
Plan to spend at least two or three days in Florence, because there is simply so much to see.
And if you really want to get a sense of what life might have felt like during the European Renaissance, it is difficult to imagine a better place to experience it.
Florence allows you to walk directly through that history.
For us, that was what made it unforgettable.

Tuscany is one of those places that somehow feels exactly the way you hoped it would—and still manages to surprise you.
The rolling vineyards. The rows of cypress trees. Tiny villages that look untouched by time. Little cafés tucked into old stone buildings. Homemade pasta. Family-owned wineries. Church bells. Cicadas humming in the heat.
There were moments when we would simply stop and look around because the scenery almost didn’t seem real.
Tuscany didn’t feel like somewhere we were visiting.
It felt like somewhere we had stepped into.
Our Most Memorable Moment
There is honestly no possible way for us to choose just one favorite memory from Tuscany.
But if we had to narrow it down, several moments rise immediately to the top.
One was our visit to a family-owned winery, where we arrived by horse-drawn carriage, rode around the property, drank their wine and ate fresh homemade pasta.
It was everything you imagine Tuscany should be.
Nothing felt staged or overly polished. It felt personal, relaxed and authentic—the kind of experience where you realize halfway through that this is probably going to become one of those memories you talk about for years.
Then there was the chapel.
We walked up the stairs to the top of a panoramic chapel, and when we reached it, I had one of those rare moments that is difficult to explain.
My hair literally stood on end.
I could feel God’s presence.
Looking out over the valley below—the vineyards, the cypress trees, the Tuscan countryside stretching into the distance—while the cicadas made that unmistakable summer sound was surreal.
It felt like everything I had ever imagined Tuscany would be, all in one moment.
And then there was something much smaller that became just as memorable.
In one tiny village, a darling shop owner told us that she had been watching my husband and me together and could see how much we loved each other.
She wanted us to have something.
So she gave me a jar of her homemade plum jam.
It wasn’t expensive.
It wasn’t planned.
And that is exactly why I will probably remember it forever.
Sometimes the most meaningful souvenirs aren’t the ones you buy.
What Surprised Us
A quiet cobblestone lane winding through one of Tuscany’s beautifully preserved villages.
The sheer beauty surprised us.
Even though you have seen photographs of Tuscany your entire life, being there is different.
There are places where it genuinely feels as though you have stepped back in time.
Old stone walls. Weathered shutters. Narrow streets. Tiny churches. Little cafés appearing around a corner. Buildings that have stood for generations.
Nothing needs to be manufactured to create atmosphere.
The atmosphere is already there.
Tuscany has a softness and authenticity that photographs don’t quite capture.

Our meal at the family-owned winery was especially memorable because it wasn’t just about the food. It was about where we were, who had prepared it, the wine being poured beside us and the countryside surrounding us.
Those are the meals you can’t recreate when you get home.
Not because you couldn’t make the pasta.
Because you can’t reproduce the moment.

Tuscany is made for wandering together.
We explored little villages, walked ancient streets, stopped whenever something caught our attention and allowed the day to unfold instead of trying to race through an itinerary.

No rushing.
No checking the clock.

The villages felt peaceful and relaxed, and we were completely comfortable wandering, exploring and spending time in the countryside.
As always when traveling, we pay attention to our surroundings and belongings, but Tuscany itself felt extremely comfortable to us.

Things We Didn’t Love
This may be the easiest section of the entire story.
We loved everything.
There are trips where you come home with a list of things you would change next time.
Tuscany wasn’t one of them.
The pace, scenery, food, people, history and romance of the region all worked together in a way that felt effortless.
We wouldn’t try to make Tuscany busier.
If anything, we would slow it down even more.
Who Should Visit?
Tuscany is for romantics, wanderers, wine lovers and history lovers.
It is especially wonderful for people who don’t need every hour of a vacation scheduled.
If you love wandering down a street simply because it looks interesting…
If you would happily spend an afternoon over wine and homemade pasta…
If ancient churches, family-run businesses, vineyards and centuries-old villages make you curious…
You will probably fall in love with Tuscany.
It is also incredibly romantic.
Not necessarily in a grand, elaborate way.
In a quieter way.
Walking together.

Sitting somewhere beautiful with nowhere else you need to be.

And Tuscany gave us more of those than we could count.
What We Love Most About Tuscany
What we love most about Tuscany is that the beauty isn’t separate from everyday life.
It is everywhere.
In the view from a chapel.
In an old doorway.
At a vegetable stand.
Along a cobblestone street.
At a family table.
In a glass of wine.
In two people wandering through a village with absolutely nowhere they need to be.
Tuscany reminded us that sometimes the most beautiful way to travel is simply to slow down enough to notice where you are.
And we absolutely intend to go back.

There are beautiful places, and then there are places that seem almost too perfect to be real.
Portofino was one of those places for us.
Arriving by boat, the tiny harbor appeared beneath the green hills like something straight out of a storybook—pastel buildings clustered around brilliant blue water, beautiful yachts filling the harbor, cafés along the waterfront and historic buildings rising above it all.
It was one of those wonderful travel moments when Bill and I looked at each other and thought, Can this place actually be real?
Our Most Memorable Moment
Without question, our most memorable moment was arriving in Portofino by boat.
There is something magical about approaching this little village from the water.
As we entered the harbor, Portofino slowly came into view—the colorful buildings, beautiful boats, green hillside and cafés surrounding the water.
It was surreal.
We kept saying it looked like something Disney might have created for an impossibly perfect Italian village.
Except this wasn’t a movie set.
It was Portofino.
And seeing it for the first time from the water is something I don’t think either of us will ever forget.
What Surprised Us
What surprised us most was how small and quaint Portofino actually is.
You see so many photographs of it that somehow you imagine a much larger destination.
Instead, it feels wonderfully intimate.
The village was also incredibly clean and beautiful. The architecture, landscaping, colorful buildings and sparkling water seemed so perfectly arranged that at times it honestly didn’t seem real.
That small scale is part of what makes Portofino so charming.
You don’t feel as though you need to race from one attraction to another.
You can simply wander.
Above the Harbor
Part of Portofino’s storybook appearance comes from what you see when you look up from the harbor.
High above the waterfront are two of the village’s historic landmarks: Chiesa di San Giorgio and Castello Brown.
The little church sits dramatically above the sea, while Castello Brown occupies an even higher position overlooking the harbor.
From below, surrounded by the green hillside, they become part of the extraordinary scenery—the colorful village at water level, yachts in the harbor and these historic landmarks rising above it all.
It is one of those views where nearly every direction you turn gives you another beautiful picture.
Coffee, Food & Everyday Moments
The food itself was good, although it wasn’t necessarily what we will remember most.
What we loved was the experience of eating and drinking in Portofino.
Our favorite stop was the Dolce & Gabbana café.
It wasn’t simply somewhere to grab a coffee. The entire setting was stylish, playful and completely suited to Portofino.
Even an espresso became part of the experience.
We spent plenty of time doing something that requires absolutely no itinerary:
Sitting in cafés.
People-watching.
And, perhaps even better in Portofino, yacht-watching.
One thing worth knowing is that the restaurants and cafés directly overlooking the harbor are extremely popular. Even during our late-September visit, there were long lines for some of the waterfront tables.
But in a place this beautiful, waiting isn’t quite as irritating as it normally would be.
Adventures Together
Our Portofino adventure was wonderfully uncomplicated.
We walked the quaint cobblestone streets, wandered through the shops, stopped at cafés and spent a lot of time simply enjoying where we were.
There are also some serious designer boutiques tucked into this tiny village.
We especially loved our experience at Louis Vuitton.
The manager was incredibly nice and made our visit feel genuinely personal.
I also found some wonderful aprons and cute little Portofino dresses—some for myself and others to bring home as gifts.
Those are my favorite kinds of souvenirs: things I will actually use or wear that immediately remind me of somewhere we loved.
And then there were the yachts.
You could easily spend an afternoon here doing nothing more than watching the boats come and go.
Portofino is one of those rare destinations where doing less somehow feels like doing exactly enough.
Did We Feel Safe?
Absolutely.
We felt very safe in Portofino.
The village felt clean, relaxed and comfortable throughout our visit.
As we do anywhere we travel, we remained aware of our surroundings and belongings in crowded areas, but we never felt uncomfortable or unsafe.
We never felt rushed.
We had time to walk, shop, enjoy the cafés, sit along the harbor and take everything in.
I can certainly understand the appeal of staying overnight—especially experiencing Portofino after many of the daytime visitors have departed—but if your itinerary allows only a full-day visit, don’t hesitate.
For us, it worked beautifully.
Things We Didn’t Love
There really wasn’t much.
We visited in late September, so the crowds weren’t nearly what they would be during the height of summer.
But Portofino was still busy.
There were long lines for some of the cafés and restaurants overlooking the harbor.
It was also very hot, even that late in September.
Neither was enough to hamper our enjoyment.
The place was simply too unbelievable for us to care very much.
If we were planning another visit, I would probably arrange a waterfront restaurant ahead of time and definitely dress for warmer weather than you might expect.
Who Should Visit?
Portofino is perfect for travelers looking for a quiet, romantic and visually beautiful experience.
Couples would especially love it.
It would be wonderful for a honeymoon, anniversary or romantic getaway.
This is a destination for lazy mornings, long lunches, romantic strolls, shopping, coffee breaks and simply sitting beside the water together.
If you want a vacation packed with attractions every hour, Portofino may feel too quiet.
But if your idea of a wonderful day is wandering beautiful streets, sitting at a café and watching yachts drift through an Italian harbor, you may never want to leave.

Portofino was different.

And repeatedly stopping just to look around.

You walk slowly.
You sit longer.
You order another coffee.
You watch the boats come and go.
And every once in a while, you look at the person beside you and think:

The mountains rise dramatically behind the water. Magnificent villas line the shoreline. Flowers spill over balconies and terraces, and nearly every view looks as though it belongs in a beautiful Italian travel magazine.
It feels romantic, polished, peaceful, and undeniably expensive.
One thing we learned very quickly?
Lake Como is even more beautiful from the water.
Our Most Memorable Moments
Our most memorable experience was taking a boat ride across Lake Como.
There is simply no better way to appreciate the beauty of the lake.
From the boat, we could see the magnificent villas, elegant hotels, private gardens, charming villages, and dramatic mountain scenery surrounding the water. The lake was bustling with activity.
Every turn revealed another extraordinary view.
Some of the villas looked as though they had been lifted directly from a fairy-tale picture book. The combination of old-world architecture, lush gardens, sparkling water, and mountain views was almost impossible to take in all at once.
It was peaceful, glamorous, and completely unforgettable.

The Cathedral of Como
One of the most important landmarks in the city of Como is the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, often called the Duomo di Como.
Construction began in 1396 and continued in stages for more than three centuries, with the dome completed in the eighteenth century. Because it took so long to finish, the cathedral combines several architectural styles, including Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque elements.
The cathedral is dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and serves as the mother church of the Diocese of Como. Its marble façade, rose window, sculptural details, and grand dome make it one of the most striking buildings in the city.
What makes it especially interesting is the contrast between its ornate exterior and the feeling inside. The interior is filled with historic artwork, tapestries, carved details, and chapels that reflect the many centuries during which the cathedral was built.
It is also located close to the lakefront, making it an easy and worthwhile stop while exploring the city of Como. The beauty of the church and the feeling we had when we walked inside, we will never forget.
Where We Stayed: We stayed at the renowned Villa d’Este and it was worth the splurge. It was magnificent and the setting is extraordinary.
The hotel sits directly along Lake Como, surrounded by beautiful gardens, historic architecture, and stunning views of the water and mountains.
Villa d’Este began is a sixteenth-century private residence that was transformed into a luxury hotel in 1873. Set in extensive gardens directly on Lake Como, it is known for its historic architecture, lakefront setting, and iconic floating pool. Staying there felt like becoming part of the Lake Como experience rather than simply visiting it.
It was refined, romantic, and filled with the kind of old-world beauty that makes a trip feel especially memorable.
Would we stay there again? Probably not. There are so many beautiful hotels on the lake at better prices. .
What Surprised Us
We expected Lake Como to be luxurious.
We did not expect quite so much luxury.
The number of grand villas, elegant homes, and extremely expensive hotels lining the lake was incredible. Everywhere we looked, there seemed to be another beautiful estate tucked into the hills or positioned directly along the water.
The entire area has a very exclusive feeling.
We were also surprised by how crowded it was in late August. Lake Como is often shown as quiet and peaceful in photographs, but some of the most popular areas were much busier than we expected.
And then there was the rain.
We had pictured bright sunshine and perfect Italian weather throughout the trip, so the rain caught us slightly off guard. It was actually kind of nice and romantic, and didn’t last long.

I was able to check off another bucket list item, when we went by George Clooney’s villa. It was spectacular! Unfortunately, we didn’t see George Clooney. Oh well… maybe next time.
Coffee, Food & Everyday Moments
Some of the most enjoyable parts of Lake Como were the simple moments.
Sitting at a lakeside café.
Ordering a cappuccino.
Sharing a pizza.
Watching the boats move across the water.
The setting makes even an ordinary lunch feel special.
One of our favorite meals was a relaxed pizza lunch overlooking the lake. The food was simple, but the view made the experience feel luxurious.
That is one of the things we love most about traveling.
The quiet everyday moments often become just as memorable as the major attractions.

Adventures Together
Our boat rides were the true adventures of the trip.
Cruising across Lake Como gave us a completely different perspective of the area. From the water, we could see how the villages, villas, gardens, and mountains all fit together around the lake.
It felt glamorous without being overly formal.
Relaxed without being ordinary.
And romantic without anyone having to try very hard.
The scenery did most of the work.
This was one of those experiences where we found ourselves saying the same thing over and over again.
Look at that villa.
Look at that view.
Look at that house.
Lake Como makes it very difficult to stop taking pictures.
Did We Feel Safe?
Yes.
We felt very safe throughout our stay.
The towns, hotels, waterfront areas, and shopping streets all felt comfortable and welcoming. We were able to walk around, explore, dine, and enjoy the area without feeling uneasy.
As with any popular destination, it is still wise to keep an eye on your belongings in crowded tourist areas.
Overall, however, Lake Como felt peaceful, secure, and easy to enjoy.
Things We Didn’t Love
The prices.
Lake Como is beautiful, but it is certainly not an inexpensive destination.
Hotels, restaurants, boat trips, and many everyday expenses can be considerably higher than travelers might expect.
The crowds in late August were another drawback.
Some areas felt much busier than the quiet, serene Lake Como scenes commonly shown in photographs.
The unexpected rain also changed some of our plans, although it certainly did not ruin the trip.
Who Should Visit?
Lake Como is perfect for travelers who:

• Appreciate luxury hotels and beautiful villas
• Enjoy quiet, scenic vacations
• Love boat rides and waterfront views

Next time, we might consider traveling outside the busiest part of the summer season. Fewer crowds and slightly cooler weather could make an already beautiful destination feel even more peaceful.

Our Most Memorable Moments
There were two moments we’ll never forget.
The first was simply wandering through Santorini’s winding cobblestone streets. Surrounded by pristine white buildings, brilliant blue domes, vibrant pink bougainvillea, and breathtaking views around every corner, we kept looking at each other asking,
“Is this for real?”
It truly felt like we had stepped into a fairytale.
Our second unforgettable moment was enjoying lunch overlooking the caldera.
The view was simply breathtaking.
Watching the sparkling Aegean Sea stretch endlessly below the dramatic cliffs while enjoying a leisurely meal was one of the most incredible dining experiences we’ve ever experienced.

What Surprised Us
What surprised us most was the incredible cleanliness.
Everything looked absolutely immaculate.
The streets, buildings, gardens, restaurants, and walkways were so pristine that it almost reminded us of walking through Disneyland.
Everything appeared perfectly maintained.
It almost didn’t seem real.
Coffee, Food & Everyday Moments
One of our favorite experiences was lunch at Rizes, perched high above the caldera.
Not only were the views absolutely spectacular, but the restaurant itself was beautifully designed with a clean, modern atmosphere that perfectly complemented its incredible surroundings.
The food was fantastic.
We also spent quite a while talking with the manager, who made us feel genuinely welcome.
Like so many people we met throughout Santorini, everyone was warm, friendly, and accommodating.
After dining there, it was easy to understand why Rizes has become an island favorite.
Adventures Together
Unlike some destinations that revolve around nonstop activities, Santorini invites you to slow down.
Our favorite adventure was simply wandering.
We spent hours walking the picturesque cobblestone streets, browsing charming boutiques, discovering hidden cafés, stopping to admire the incredible architecture, and soaking in one breathtaking view after another.
Sometimes the best adventures aren’t planned at all.
They’re simply experienced one beautiful step at a time.
Did We Feel Safe?
Absolutely.
Throughout our visit, we felt incredibly safe.
Whether we were walking through town during the day or enjoying the evening atmosphere, Santorini always felt peaceful, welcoming, and comfortable.
It allowed us to completely relax and simply enjoy every moment.
Things We Didn’t Love
Honestly, there wasn’t much not to love.
If we had to choose one thing, it would be the tram that transports visitors down to the waterfront.
The lines could become quite long, especially during busy times of the day.
Fortunately, once you reached the bottom, the incredible scenery made the wait worthwhile.

There are vacations you plan for months.
Then there are the ones that happen almost by accident.
Our trip to Istanbul was one of those wonderfully spontaneous adventures that quickly became one of the most unforgettable journeys we’ve ever taken. Looking back, it’s hard to believe we almost didn’t go.
If I’m being completely honest, I was nervous.
This would be my first opportunity to experience Middle Eastern culture up close and personally. Like many people, I wasn’t sure what to expect. Our family was concerned about us traveling there, and before we left, my husband asked our dear friend Erhan—who grew up in Istanbul and whom we’ve known for more than forty years—to watch over me as though I were his own wife.
That conversation said everything about how we were feeling before boarding the plane.
What happened after we arrived completely changed my perspective.
Instead of fear, we found warmth.
Instead of uncertainty, we found hospitality.
Instead of simply visiting another destination, we discovered one of the most fascinating, energetic, and welcoming cities we’ve ever experienced.
Some places are beautiful.
Others stay with you forever.
For us, Istanbul became both.
Our Most Memorable Moments
Every destination leaves you with a few special memories.
Istanbul gave us dozens.
One of the very first happened before sunrise on our first morning.
We suddenly woke to the sound of the call to prayer echoing across the city. It wasn’t anything like we’d ever experienced before. The voices carried through the early morning darkness, filling the skyline in a way that was both haunting and beautiful.
It was eerie.
It gave us chills.
For a moment it almost felt like we were in the middle of a movie.
We simply looked at each other in silence and smiled.
“We’re really here.”
That was the moment it truly sank in that we’d traveled halfway around the world to experience a culture unlike anything we’d known before.
It remains one of the most unforgettable memories of the entire trip.
Another moment we’ll never forget happened near the end of our trip.
It was almost 11:00 in the evening.
Back home, that’s the time when streets are usually quiet.
Not in Istanbul.
Families were still out walking together.
Restaurants were full.
Music drifted through the streets.
Children laughed as they played nearby.
Friends filled outdoor cafés, talking over coffee and dessert as though it were the middle of the afternoon.
The entire city was alive.
It honestly felt more like four o’clock in the afternoon than two o’clock in the morning.
That vibrant energy became one of the things we loved most about Istanbul.
What Surprised Us Most
Without question, the biggest surprise was how completely safe I felt.
Before arriving, I honestly wasn’t sure how comfortable I would be. My concerns weren’t based on personal experience—they were based on the unknown.
What I discovered instead was kindness.
Warm smiles.
Friendly conversations.
Families enjoying evenings together.
A city full of life.
Having Erhan show us his hometown through the eyes of someone who truly loved it made all the difference. We weren’t simply seeing famous landmarks—we were experiencing the city the way locals do.
By the end of the trip, the place that had made me the most nervous before we left had become one of the places where I felt most comfortable.
That was a lesson I’ll never forget.
Experiencing a Different Culture
Although we’d traveled throughout Europe before, this was our first opportunity to experience Middle Eastern culture so personally.
That was one of the reasons I had been apprehensive before the trip.
Like many people, I had formed opinions based on headlines and things I’d heard rather than personal experience. Istanbul challenged those assumptions in the best possible way.
Every day introduced us to traditions, customs, architecture, music, and daily life that felt completely new, yet somehow familiar because of the warmth of the people we met.
Travel has a wonderful way of replacing assumptions with understanding.
Istanbul certainly did that for us.
I’ll always be grateful that we explored the city with Erhan.
Having known him for more than forty years, we trusted him completely. Seeing Istanbul through the eyes of someone who grew up there allowed us to discover places, traditions, and experiences we probably would have missed as tourists.
He didn’t simply show us where to go.
He helped us understand why Istanbul is so deeply loved by the people who call it home.
Wandering the Grand Bazaar
No visit to Istanbul would feel complete without wandering through the Grand Bazaar.
It’s impossible to describe the feeling of stepping inside.
Around every corner were colorful ceramics, handmade rugs, beautiful leather goods, jewelry, spices, textiles, antiques, and tiny family-owned shops that seemed unchanged for generations.
It wasn’t just shopping.
It was an experience.
Even if you don’t buy a single thing, simply walking through its winding passageways is something you’ll remember forever.
The Spice Market was another feast for the senses.
Towering displays of colorful spices, dried fruits, teas, Turkish delights, nuts, and sweets created one of the most beautiful markets we’ve ever explored.
The aromas alone were unforgettable.
We found ourselves slowing down, taking everything in, talking with shop owners, tasting new things, and simply enjoying the experience rather than rushing through it.
Those slower moments often become our favorite travel memories.
One of the simplest pleasures was sampling authentic Turkish Delight.
There were dozens of varieties, each more beautiful than the last.
Some were filled with pistachios.
Others with hazelnuts, rose, citrus, or pomegranate.
It quickly became obvious why this traditional sweet has become famous around the world.
One unexpected source of inspiration came from the incredible handcrafted lanterns displayed throughout the markets.
Their vibrant colors, intricate glasswork, and warm glow reminded me that beautiful design exists in every culture.
As someone who loves decorating and entertaining, I found myself imagining how easily these artistic details could inspire our own homes.
Sometimes travel doesn’t just change where we want to go.
It changes how we see beauty itself.
Everyday Life in Istanbul
One of the things we enjoy most when traveling isn’t necessarily checking famous landmarks off a list.
It’s watching everyday life.
Sitting in cafés.
Walking through neighborhoods.
Listening to conversations we don’t understand.
Watching children play.
Observing how people gather, celebrate, and simply live.
Istanbul offered those moments everywhere we went.
Historic trams rolled through bustling shopping streets while centuries-old buildings stood beside modern boutiques and cafés.
It was a fascinating blend of old and new that somehow worked perfectly together.
One of the things I loved most was people watching.
Women dressed in beautiful traditional clothing walked alongside young professionals, families, and visitors from every corner of the world.
It was a reminder that Istanbul is truly a crossroads of cultures, where history and modern life exist side by side.
Those quiet moments often become some of the richest travel memories.
Did We Feel Safe?
This is probably the question I’ve been asked most since returning home.
The answer, based entirely on our personal experience, is yes.
Before leaving for Turkey, I honestly wasn’t sure how I would feel.
That uncertainty disappeared almost immediately.
Walking through Istanbul late at night became one of the biggest surprises of our trip.
Nearly every evening the streets were filled with families enjoying dinner, friends meeting for coffee, couples taking walks, musicians performing, and children laughing together.
The city felt incredibly alive.
By the time we found ourselves strolling through the streets close to 11:00 in the evening, I realized I felt completely comfortable.
That wasn’t something I expected to say before we arrived.
Travel has a wonderful way of challenging assumptions, and Istanbul certainly challenged mine.
One Night We’ll Never Forget
Some travel memories simply can’t be planned.
One evening, what started as a wonderful dinner overlooking the Bosphorus turned into an unforgettable celebration.
Live music filled the restaurant, and before I knew it, I was being invited onto the stage to sing with the entertainer.
The crowd applauded, laughed, and encouraged everyone to join in.
It was one of those wonderfully spontaneous moments that makes travel so rewarding.
The evening became even more memorable as guests throughout the restaurant grabbed tambourines, drums, and joined a lively conga line that wound its way through the room.
There was laughter everywhere.
Music filled the air.
Complete strangers celebrated together as though we’d known each other for years.
Throughout the evening we toasted with Rakı, Turkey’s famous anise-flavored spirit affectionately known as “Lion’s Milk” because of the cloudy white color it takes on when mixed with water.
It wasn’t just dinner.
It was an experience.
Years later, it’s still one of the first stories we tell whenever someone asks us about Istanbul.
Every trip seems to include one familiar tradition.
Coffee.
We were told this was the world’s largest Starbucks, and naturally we couldn’t resist stopping in.
Whether that’s officially true or not, it became another fun memory that still makes us smile.
Sometimes it’s the little moments that make a trip uniquely yours.
Where We Stayed
One of the things that can make or break a vacation is where you stay. We stayed at the CVK Park Bosphorus Hotel and it was fabulous.
We were fortunate to stay in a beautiful hotel that combined elegant surroundings with genuine Turkish hospitality. After spending our days walking through markets, visiting historic sites, and exploring the city, it was wonderful returning each evening to such a comfortable and welcoming place.
The beautifully designed lobby quickly became one of our favorite gathering spots before heading out each morning or unwinding after another memorable day.
As much as we loved sightseeing, it was equally nice having a place that felt peaceful and inviting.
Things We Didn’t Love
No destination is perfect, and that’s part of what makes travel interesting.
Like many large international cities, Istanbul can be busy, especially around the most popular attractions.
The Grand Bazaar and Spice Market are incredible experiences, but they can also be crowded, particularly during peak travel seasons.
Traffic can be heavy, and crossing busy streets sometimes requires a little patience.
Those minor inconveniences, however, were a very small price to pay for everything the city had to offer.
They certainly didn’t take away from our experience.
Who Should Visit Istanbul?
If you love history, architecture, shopping, food, culture, photography, or simply experiencing places that feel completely different from home, Istanbul deserves a place on your travel list.
It’s especially wonderful for travelers who love activity and night life. Although slowing down, wandering neighborhoods, discovering hidden cafés, and allowing unexpected moments to become the highlight of the trip.

Barcelona is a city full of life. From bustling boulevards and historic architecture to outdoor cafés and lively plazas, there is always something happening. It feels both European and international at the same time, blending old-world charm with modern city energy.
One thing we learned very quickly?
Barcelona is just as exciting without luggage as it is with it.
Our suitcases never arrived.

There wasn’t just one memorable moment in Barcelona.
There were several.
The bad? Our luggage disappeared somewhere between airports and never made it to Barcelona with us.
The good? Learning to laugh about it.
I quickly found myself creating outfits from my husband’s carry-on wardrobe, making one oversized black T-shirt and a pair of leggings work far harder than they were ever intended to.
Thankfully, Barcelona turned out to be a wonderful city for a little unexpected shopping.
Another favorite memory was people-watching along Las Ramblas. There was always something happening, and we could have easily spent hours simply sitting, observing, and taking in the energy of the city.
And then there was the scooter ride.
Part terrifying.
Part exhilarating.
Completely unforgettable.
What Surprised Us
What surprised us most was the incredible diversity of the city.
The crowds were multicultural, international, and full of energy. People from all over the world seemed to come together in Barcelona, creating an atmosphere that felt welcoming and vibrant.
We were also surprised by how Americanized parts of the city felt.
There were familiar stores, recognizable restaurant chains, and many reminders of home mixed among the historic architecture and European charm.
Barcelona somehow manages to feel uniquely Spanish while also feeling incredibly international.
Coffee, Food & Everyday Moments
As always, some of our favorite travel memories happened during the quieter moments.
The coffee was excellent.
The food, for us, was a little more hit-and-miss.
We found ourselves enjoying the cafés and coffee culture more than many of the meals.
One of our favorite ways to experience a city is to slow down, order a coffee, and simply watch everyday life unfold around us.
Barcelona gave us plenty of opportunities to do exactly that.
Adventures Together
The scooter ride deserves its own section.
It was one of those travel experiences that feels slightly questionable while you’re doing it and absolutely wonderful afterward.
We laughed, held on tight, and experienced the city from an entirely different perspective.
Travel memories are often made from the unexpected moments, and this was definitely one of them.
Did We Feel Safe?
Yes.
We generally felt safe throughout our stay.
Most of the areas we visited were busy and filled with people, and we found locals to be friendly, helpful, and welcoming.
One of the moments that stood out most was when our driver actually took us back to the airport to help us search for our missing luggage. That level of kindness left a lasting impression.
That said, Barcelona is a major tourist destination, and it’s important to stay aware of your surroundings.
We noticed plenty of warnings about pickpockets and petty theft.
Our recommendation?
Wear a crossbody bag, keep valuables secure, and use the same common sense you would in any major city.
Where We Stayed
Hotel Las Ramblas
Hotel Las Ramblas turned out to be the perfect home base for exploring the city.
What we loved most was the location. We could easily walk to many of Barcelona’s most popular attractions, cafés, restaurants, and shopping areas.
For travelers who want to be in the heart of the action, it’s hard to beat.
Would we stay again?
Absolutely.
Things We Didn’t Love

While it eventually became part of the adventure, it certainly wasn’t our favorite way to start a trip.
As for the city itself, we enjoyed Barcelona far more than we expected.

It’s romantic without trying too hard, lively without feeling chaotic, and so visually stunning that it often feels like you’re walking through a movie set rather than a real city.
Our Most Memorable Moment
Nothing could have prepared us for our first glimpse of Venice.
Arriving by boat, we suddenly realized we were looking at a place we had seen in photographs, movies, and travel magazines our entire lives. And somehow, it was even more beautiful in person.
As the city came into view, we looked at each other and said:
“We’re here. We’re actually in Venice.”
The colors, the architecture, the water, the history—it all felt surreal. Venice didn’t just meet our expectations. It completely exceeded them.
And for me, there was another layer to the experience.
When I was a little girl, I heard a story that if you’re kissed under a bridge in Venice, you’ll spend your life with the love of your life. From that moment on, visiting Venice became one of those dreams I carried with me for years.
I dreamed about that moment for so long that before our trip, I actually hired a photographer to make sure I captured it.
And yes, it happened.

What We Loved Most
Getting Lost
One of the things we loved most about Venice was getting lost.
That may sound strange, but Venice isn’t a city you conquer with a map. It’s a city you experience by wandering.
The streets twist and turn through a maze of canals, bridges, hidden courtyards, and charming passageways. Every wrong turn seemed to reveal another beautiful view, another quiet canal, or another picturesque corner we would have missed otherwise.
In fact, after arriving, it took us nearly an hour to find our hotel.
The funny part?
When we finally found it, we realized we had walked past it several times.
We were so captivated by everything around us that we simply didn’t notice.
And honestly, we didn’t care.
The Walkability
One of the biggest surprises was that Venice is completely walkable.
There are no cars.
No traffic.
No honking horns.
You simply walk.
The slower pace creates a completely different travel experience. Instead of rushing from one attraction to the next, you naturally slow down and enjoy the journey itself.
The Charming Boutique Hotels
Another surprise was the number of beautiful boutique hotels tucked throughout the city.
Around nearly every corner seemed to be another charming little hotel hidden within the maze of streets and canals. Many looked far more affordable than we expected while still feeling full of character and old-world charm.
In Venice, even walking back to your hotel becomes part of the adventure.
A Morning We’ll Never Forget
One of our favorite memories in Venice was spending a slow morning at Caffè Florian overlooking Piazza San Marco.
With coffee in hand, we settled into our seats and watched the world go by. In front of us, a pianist in a white tuxedo played a white grand piano while visitors wandered through the square.
As I listened to the music, I closed my eyes and imagined what this same scene might have looked like a century ago.
The buildings surrounding Piazza San Marco have witnessed generations of travelers, artists, musicians, and dreamers. Sitting there, it felt as though time had momentarily stood still.
We planned to stay for a quick coffee.
Instead, we stayed for hours.
And when it was finally time to leave, neither of us wanted to go.
The Romance
It’s impossible to talk about Venice without mentioning the romance.
Whether it was strolling hand in hand through quiet streets, crossing bridges together, sharing coffee in Piazza San Marco, or simply watching life unfold along the canals, Venice seemed designed for slowing down and enjoying the moment.
There is a reason Venice has inspired artists, writers, and dreamers for centuries.
It truly feels magical.
What Surprised Us Most
The biggest surprise was how walkable Venice is.
Of course, we knew there were no cars, but we didn’t fully appreciate what that meant until we arrived. Venice isn’t a city you drive through—it’s a city you experience on foot.
The streets felt like an endless maze of bridges, canals, hidden passageways, charming shops, and beautiful architecture.
Getting lost wasn’t a problem.
It was part of the experience.
Did We Feel Safe?
Absolutely.
In fact, Venice may be one of the safest places we’ve ever visited.
We spent hours wandering through side streets, crossing bridges, and exploring hidden corners without ever feeling uncomfortable.
Even when we were completely lost, we never felt unsafe.
One Thing We Didn’t Love
If we had to pick one thing, it would be the graffiti.
Venice is one of the most beautiful places we’ve ever visited, so it was disappointing to occasionally see historic buildings and walls marked with graffiti.
It felt out of place in a city that has preserved so much history and beauty for centuries.
That said, it’s hardly unique to Venice. Unfortunately, it’s something we’ve encountered throughout Europe and many major cities around the world.
And while it caught our attention, it certainly wasn’t enough to diminish our experience.
Venice remained every bit as magical as we had imagined.
Would We Go Back?
Absolutely.
In fact, we’re already planning our next trip.
There are very few places we’ve visited that left us wanting more the moment we departed, but Venice is one of them. We could spend days wandering its endless maze of canals and hidden streets, discovering new corners, lingering longer in Piazza San Marco, and simply soaking in the magic that seems to exist around every turn.
Venice exceeded every expectation we had—and that’s saying a lot for a place we’d dreamed about our entire lives.
Who Should Visit Venice?
Everyone.
But especially those in love.
If you’re looking for magic, Venice is for you.
It’s difficult to explain until you’ve experienced it yourself, but Venice feels different from anywhere else we’ve ever visited. The canals, the architecture, the history, the music drifting through Piazza San Marco, the hidden alleyways, and the feeling that you’ve somehow stepped into another era all come together to create something truly special.
Whether you’re traveling with the love of your life, exploring on your own, or simply checking off a lifelong bucket-list destination, Venice has a way of making ordinary moments feel magical.
And perhaps that’s what we loved most.
